Article:
I do a lot of reading, particularly articles that pertain to search engine optimization. For those of us doing this for a living, it is important to keep up with the latest changes and trends.
What I’m finding is that no matter how many times trends change, no matter the plethora of different opinions and bright ideas on what works and what does not, none of it matters if the SEO rules of engagement are not followed.
SEO Rules of Engagement:
First and foremost, what I call the SEO rules of engagement must be followed for a website to maintain top placement on the search results pages. Using white hat techniques follows all the rules and avoids a web site getting penalized, or worse yet, banned altogether.
Proper optimization gets top placement when it is relevant to the search term used. My job is to make sure your web site is relevant for the message you want to convey to your readers.
Web Site Relevancy:
No matter what your business is, your site should have 100% relevancy for the following factors:
1. Website Title
2. Description
3. Keywords
4. Content
These are what make up your meta tags, which are located at the top of the source page of your site. The source page contains code that gives your site its appearance. Search engine spiders read the information in the meta tags contained in the page’s source code and indexes your site accordingly.
While arguments abound for and against the use of keyword meta tags and how they rate in rankings, I use them in my SEO work. If they didn’t matter, then why are we being told they matter in the content? If keywords have nothing to do with ranking, then why does Google have a keyword tool?
It just makes perfect sense to use them in the meta tags and I will continue to use them because they DO work! Without them, I believe, is why many search result pages hand you results that are not relevant to the search query.
For my business, the keyword meta tags will continue to be used so that pages I optimize for my clients will be that much more relevant and that much more search engine friendly.
When working on meta tags, the above four factors should be 100% Relevant to each other and the optimization rules of engagement must be followed to the letter. Among other things, following the rules and choosing the best search terms should be the top consideration for any website.
Choosing the Best Search Terms:
The best search terms for depends on the topic of your site. If it’s Lolita Dresses, that should be reflected in the meta tags as well as the content. Utilizing specific keywords and phrases relative to the products and services offered is what brings customers in the front door.
Research:
Don’t forget to research the terms you want to appear for. Choose keywords that have a good number of searches, but not a lot of competition. The higher the competition, the less chance for good first page placement. In this instance, alternative keywords can be chosen that also have a decent number of searches for them.
Long Tail Search Phrases:
Search engines will pick up on words and sentences in the content and list your site for those as well. It is not necessarily just the keyword terms listed in the meta tags. If a sentence on your site matches some Long Tail Search Phrase in a query, it could trigger your business to show up on page one of the results.
At the end of the day, a properly optimized site that follows the SEO rules of engagement stands a better chance of reaching and maintaining higher search engine rankings for the long term.
